NC Licensed Psychologist

Helping children understand the unique way they experience the world and bringing that world into focus for their families.

About Dr. Hodgson

IMG_0548_edited.jpg

Welcome to my practice! I am a licensed psychologist with over 15 years of experience in working with children who are neurodivergent thinkers, including those with autism and ADHD, with children with learning disabilities and developmental differences, and with children who are twice exceptional (2e). I specialize in providing clarity to families who are struggling to understand their child’s unique way of interpreting and processing their environment. Because developmental differences affect multiple areas of development, I provide comprehensive diagnostic evaluations to help identify children’s unique diagnostic profile and areas of need and strength. I work with children from toddlerhood through school-age and delight in helping children better understand the wonderful uniqueness of their own profiles.

I earned my PhD in School Psychology from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2006 and completed my pre- and post-doctoral training at the UNC Clinical Center for the Study of Development and Learning (now the Carolina Institute of Developmental Disabilities), where I gained experience with children with complex medical, developmental, and psychological needs. I joined the UNC TEACCH Autism Program in Charlotte and was there for many years, conducting diagnostic evaluations, training professionals, leading groups, and providing direct services to autistic individuals and their families. With my extensive background with TEACCH, I carry a dedication to working collaboratively with families, using evidence-based practices, and adjusting strategies to meet the unique needs of each individual.

Services

Parenting a child who learns, interacts, and develops differently than their peers can be a joy and a challenge. You may have wondered if your child has autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, or another developmental difference, or if your child is twice exceptional (2e). I specialize in comprehensive diagnostic evaluations for children (infants/toddlers through school-age) to identify their unique diagnostic profile and to provide answers and guidance to them and their caregivers. Results may or may not be consistent with a specific diagnosis. The exact nature of the testing will depend on the referral question, but areas considered include:

  • Cognitive Ability (IQ)

  • Autism

  • Academic Achievement

  • Adaptive Behavior (Daily Living Skills)

  • Behavioral/Emotional Functioning

  • Executive Functioning and Attention

I work with neurodivergent children who experience a mismatch between their skills and the expectations of their environments. I help children build on their many strengths while working with parents to adjust the environment to maximize success.

This can be accomplished through direct therapy, parent coaching, or a combination of both, as needed.

What to Expect

Initial Phone Call

I offer an initial 15 minute phone call at no charge to discuss whether my services are a good fit for your child and family.

Intake Appointment

During the intake appointment, we will discuss your current concerns and your child's developmental history and current status. We will determine a plan based on need. The intake appointment is typically 90 minutes.

Psychological Evaluation Appointments

If we together agree that a psychological evaluation is appropriate for your child, direct in-person testing is typically conducted in 2-3 sessions, depending on age and need. A parent feedback session will be provided when the final diagnostic evaluation report is completed.

Psychotherapy and Parent Coaching

If we together agree that psychotherapy or parent coaching is appropriate for your family, we will come up with a treatment plan and discuss expectations and goals.

Insurance

I am not an in-network provider for any insurance, which means you are responsible for full payment of my fees on the date of service. I can provide a "superbill" to families to submit to insurance if requested. Many of my services may be partially reimbursable directly to you through your health insurance, but I encourage you to contact your insurance company for out-of-network mental health service coverage.

Good Faith Estimate Notice

You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical care will cost. Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who do not have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services.

You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services. This includes related costs like medical tests, prescription drugs, equipment, and hospital fees.

Your health care provider must give you a Good Faith Estimate in writing for scheduled services within designated timeframes. You can also ask your health care provider for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule an item or service.

If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.

Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.

For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call HHS at (800) 368-1019.
